Things I have done to make myself visible (In no particular order)


1. Wear very bright pink lipstick.
2. Perform—on a stage and elsewhere.
3. Behave in such a way so as to convince others that I am funny and creative.
4. Walk around in outrageous clothes and jewelry.
5. Keep a blog.
6. Write—plays, screenplays, letters, emails, jokes.
7. Lose weight.
8. Say incendiary things in public.
9. Try hard to be someone’s friend.
10. Project myself as a talented person.
11. Sing.
12. Dance.
13. Cook.
14. Go to parties and act impressive
15. Find a good relationship.
16. Play hard to get.

I do agree with some of the things you say, but not the bit about the freeway. Keep it blue and I think the apples would reduce the effects as well.

The thing is, if you were to strip away all of those external justifications of visiblity, would you really feel invisible? I don't think you would. Because these things are really only necessary to keep you feeling buoyed up duing the bad times. During the good times, you're totally more than happy to mooch around on your own, entertain only yourself, take yourself out for a walk or to a gallery, right? Which means you are always visible - to yourself. And that's what I find the tricky bit of wanting to be an artist of any description. If you're totally happy with yourself, and totally confident in your own company - which is an ideal state of being (by today's social standards), right? - how does one continue being an artist. My only conclusion here is that therapy is therefore the anti-artist, and all therapists should be shot for ultimate crimes against art. There ends my highly productive point. vx
